Step1 Lead-in
1. Tell the students that a beautiful fish is looking for a hero in her heart. Ask the Ss to do a guessing game to guess who the hero is.
2. Ask the Ss to watch a video about Nelson Mandela and try to finish the following exercise and understand why Nelson Mandela is a hero.
(1) 他出生在一个肤色决定命运的国家。
He was ______ ____ ____ ___________ where a person’s fate(命运) is decided
by his skin colour.

Step2 Grammar Learning
1. Ask the Ss to find out the antecedent, the guide word and the clause in each sentence and learn the usages of the attributive clauses introduced by the relationship adverbs.
(1) He was born in a country where a person’s fate(命运) is decided by his skin colour.
(2) 1993 is the year when he won the Nobel Peace Prize .
(3) The reason why he received it was that he helped black people get the same
 rights as white people.
2. Ask the Ss to learn to summarize the usages of the relationship adverbs.

3. Let the Ss make a comparison and find the difference between which and when, where and why.
(1) This is the place where/in which he works.            (place adverbial)
This is the place which/that was visited by us last year.  (subject)
(2) I’ll never forget the days which/that I spent with her.   (object)  
I’ll always remember the days when/on which I stayed together
with her.                                       (time adverbial)
(3) This is the reason why/for which he went.             (reason adverbial)
The reason which/that he gave us was quite reasonable.   (object)
Summary: 先行词在定语从句中作主语、宾语指代物时用which, 作状语时用when, where, why。
4. (1) Ask the Ss to find out the antecedent, the guide word and the clause in each sentence and learn the attributive clauses introduced by preposition + which/whom.
a. It is the idea for which I have prepared to die.
b. He is the hero from whom we should learn.
(2) Ask the Ss to summarize the usages of the attributive clauses introduced by preposition + which/whom and give some tips.

Tips: 如果介词与其前面的动词是固定搭配的短语动词,介词不可前置。

5. Let the students master how to decide the preposition before the relative pronouns.
